Bruegel is seeking a full-time, Brussels-based researcher specializing in the energy and climate sector.

Candidates must possess a valid work permit or authorization to work in Belgium to be considered.

Applicants are required to hold a Ph.D. in Economics from a prominent university.

Bruegel welcomes applications from individuals with limited or no post-Ph.D. research background (for the Affiliate Fellow role), as well as those with up to nine years of post-Ph.D. research and policy involvement (for the Research Fellow position). Candidates nearing completion of their PhD within a few months of the application date are also encouraged to apply.

Founded in 2005, Bruegel is the European think tank specializing in economics. Its mission is to enhance economic policy quality through transparent, fact-based research, analysis, and debate. Researchers contribute to Bruegel’s intellectual community and collaborate with other Fellows and the communication/development teams under the Director’s guidance. The chosen candidate will gain access to Bruegel’s extensive network for discussing and sharing research outcomes and engaging with policymakers and stakeholders.

Key Responsibilities

  • Advancing Bruegel’s research in energy and climate policy via original research and innovative ideas.
  • Producing publications independently and collaboratively (including First Glances, Analyses, Policy Briefs, and external pieces like op-eds or academic articles).
  • Engaging with Bruegel’s diverse research team to formulate and refine research and policy concepts.
  • Participating in public and private events in Brussels and internationally, representing Bruegel.
  • Maintaining dialogue with various external policy stakeholders and responding to media inquiries.

The researcher is expected to significantly contribute to the ongoing development of Bruegel’s energy and climate focus area, which encompasses various sub-fields:

  • Development of EU energy markets, particularly focusing on the electricity sector.
  • EU energy and climate policy, with emphasis on implementing the ‘Fit for 55’ package and developing a new ‘Fit for 90’ initiative.
  • The interaction between energy, climate, and competitiveness within the EU.
  • EU clean industrial policy strategies.
  • The social aspects of EU climate policy.
  • EU energy security considerations.
  • The global implications of the EU’s green transition.

A key quality for Bruegel researchers is the adaptability to align their research with the rapidly evolving political and economic landscape to contribute effectively and in real-time to shaping the EU policy agenda.

Requirements

Candidates must possess a solid understanding of energy and climate economics, alongside familiarity with the EU energy and climate policy framework and its current evolution.

A demonstrable passion for energy and climate policy and a commitment to improving its implementation within the EU are essential.

Candidates should be highly self-motivated, capable of independent work, and demonstrate versatility, meticulousness, and teamwork skills under tight deadlines.

Additional valued attributes include:

  • Strong interpersonal and communication abilities.
  • The capacity to translate intricate research and policy concepts into clear, actionable recommendations for diverse audiences.
  • A strong interest in data and data visualization.
  • Programming skills, especially for accessing data via APIs or other means, data manipulation, and visualization.
