Job Description

About Anthropic
Anthropic’s mission is to create reliable, interpretable, and steerable AI systems that are safe and beneficial for users and society. Our growing team of researchers, engineers, policy experts, and business leaders collaborates to develop AI that positively impacts the world.

About the Role
As an Economist at Anthropic, you’ll lead efforts to measure and understand AI’s impact on the global economy. You’ll drive the AI Economic Index, pioneering methodologies to assess AI’s real-world effects using privacy-preserving tools and empirical data. Your work will inform policy decisions and product strategies as AI transforms industries.

Our team blends rigorous empirical methods with innovative measurement approaches. We develop unique datasets tracking AI’s influence on labor markets, productivity, and economic change. Using our privacy-preserving measurement system (Clio), we analyze millions of AI interactions to understand how AI augments and automates work across different sectors.

We seek candidates who combine economic analysis with creative measurement approaches to explore AI’s transformative effects. The ideal candidate is skilled at the intersection of empirical economics, technological change, and policy impact.

Responsibilities:

  • Lead the AI Economic Index, including quarterly reports and industry-specific analyses
  • Design and execute empirical research on AI’s economic effects using novel data sources and privacy-preserving systems
  • Develop methodologies to study AI’s impact on:
    • Labor markets and the future of work
    • Productivity and task transformation
    • Economic inequality and displacement
    • Industry-specific disruption and adaptation
  • Collaborate with academic institutions, policy think tanks, and research partners
  • Work cross-functionally with technical teams to enhance measurement infrastructure
  • Translate research insights into actionable recommendations for policy and product decisions
  • Share findings through publications, policy briefs, and presentations to diverse audiences

You may be a good fit if you have:

  • PhD in Economics or a related field, focusing on labor economics, industrial organization, or technological change
  • Proven track record of empirical research combining novel data sources with economic theory
  • Experience with:
    • Labor market analysis and occupational change
    • Task-based approaches to technological transformation
    • Large-scale data analysis and econometric methods
    • Policy-relevant economic research
  • Technical proficiency in Python, R, SQL, or similar tools for large-scale data analysis
  • Ability to work with novel datasets and learn new technical frameworks
  • Strong project leadership skills, from conception to publication
  • Effective communication across technical and non-technical audiences
  • Interest in ensuring AI development benefits humanity
  • Critical thinking about AI capabilities and limitations

Examples of Our Work:

  • The Anthropic Economic Index: Measuring AI’s Impact Through Real-World Usage Data
  • Economic Tasks Performed with AI: Evidence from Millions of Claude Conversations
  • Clio: Privacy-Preserving Insights into Real-World AI Use

Compensation:

  • Annual Salary: $265,000—$315,000 USD

Logistics:

  • Education: At least a Bachelor’s degree in a related field or equivalent experience
  • Hybrid Policy: Staff are expected to be in one of our offices at least 25% of the time, though some roles may require more
  • Visa Sponsorship: We sponsor visas for eligible candidates and work with immigration counsel to support the process

We encourage applications from candidates who may not meet every qualification. Research shows that individuals from underrepresented groups are more likely to underestimate their qualifications, so if you’re interested, we encourage you to apply.

What Makes Us Different:
At Anthropic, we believe the most impactful AI research happens through large-scale, collaborative efforts. We prioritize work that advances steerable, trustworthy AI over isolated research questions. Our approach to AI research aligns more closely with empirical sciences like physics and biology, emphasizing rigorous experimentation and discovery. We value communication skills and maintain an open, collaborative environment with frequent research discussions.

Our work builds on prior research, including projects like GPT-3, Circuit-Based Interpretability, Scaling Laws, AI & Compute, and Learning from Human Preferences.

Come Work With Us!
Anthropic is a public benefit corporation headquartered in San Francisco. We offer competitive compensation, benefits, optional equity donation matching, generous vacation and parental leave, flexible working hours, and a welcoming office environment for collaboration.
